I believe cool and quiet clocks down the cpu when its idle, so it shouldn't matter. The little difference in your temps makes me think you have a program running in the background like seti@home or folding@home, which accounts for the high idle temp. When you play a game the heat from your vid heats the cpu another degree(mine does this as well). Check the task manager to see the processor usage.

43 degrees on a K8 CPU is nothing to worry about, especially on load.

I too have an AMD Athlon 64 3700+, though mine is a socket 754 Clawhammer, and my idle temp is 42C. Is this also too high? I have AS5 on it and the stock fan. I'm think of placing 5 80mm fans and PCI fan card with 2 80mm fans on it in my case, will this help reduce the temp any?

I've got an opteron 146 @ 2.7ghz with a CNPS9500. My idle is 33-34, and my load is 42-43 C.

you should only start worrying about K8 CPU's if they go above about 55 degrees, or maybe 60 if it is a dual core.
