Default Sound question

Hi right now I am interested in upgrading my sound for my comp. I mostly just listen to music and play games and am wondering if I was to get a good set of headphones like the SENNHEISER HD 280 would I also have to get a good sound card as an upgrade from onboard sound (Realtek ALC850) or will my onboard sound be good enough to make the good headphones sound as they should (sort of will my onboard sound bottleneck my headphones...??) thanks for your help

I realize that the sound card will make a difference but would I be wasting my money buying good headphones with onboard sound or will the headphones still sound really good (but even better with the sound card)
