Default Seagate to cut off IDE drives, by the end of the year

Quote:
Seagate plans to cease manufacturing IDE hard drives by the end of the year and will focus exclusively on SATA-based products. Seagate is the first major hard drive manufacturer to announce such plans, though others will likely follow suit as SATA continues to sap PATA's market share. According to a report published at Australian-based ITNews last January, SATA now accounts for 66.7 percent of desktop hard drive sales, 44 percent of laptop sales, and an unspecified (but increasing) amount of enterprise storage connectivity.

I guess it's about time...

I knew the end of IDE drives would be soon. IDE drives will blow over fast I think, people who use IDE drives already have theirs and there will still be plenty of IDE drives floating around online for the next couple years.

It won't be like AGP which took forever to kill, but that was understandable. No one wants to have to upgrade other hardware so they can get a faster GPU

Tell that to the Sissoft Sandra memory benches on AM2 systems.

About time is right. I can't remember the last rig I built and used IDE.

true...but high frequency vs low latency...by "better" i meant the overall latency of the ram.

4 clock cycles at 400MHZ (ddr2-800) is the same wait as 2 clock cycles at 200MHZ (DDR400)

there are twice as many clock cycles, but the clock cycles go by twice as fast.
