Just something I designed a while ago because I was bored.

Motherboard – Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3 - $153.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813128012

Case – TT Tsunami - $115.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811133132

Processor – Intel C2D E6300 - $193.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115005

Memory – 2 x 1GB OCZ Gold - $200.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820227124

Videocard – eVGA GeForce 7900GT KO Superclocked - $290.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814130016

Hard Drive – 250GB Seagate Barracuda - $80.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822148142

Power Supply – 450W Forton PSU - $52.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817104954

Sound Card – CSB Live! - $26.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16829102176

Optical Drive – Samsung DVD burner - $33.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16827151133

Cooling – Zalman 9500 - $63.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16835118003

Total = $1205.

Switch to a better motherboard, maybe one of the ASUS marvels. And maybe the E6400 processor for a little added boost.

I love it how RAM is more than an amazing CPU these days...lol

Also, dont get that PSU, dont go cheap on your psu.

Here's a good one Antec 550

Also, I would rather go with this case Cooler Master

Dude, Forton (FSP Group) is one of the best PSU makers on the planet. The name is synonomous with quality. Im not just talking by myself either, ask anyone that knows about PSUs. And its cheap because its 450W. Thats all thats needed for that build. No point in going for a more expensive PSU when you dont need the extra power.

And what kind of a computer suits a STUDENT? A64 or Conroe? See what a pointless question that was?
The point of the question was simply if the parents want to buy him a laptop, then they are going to buy one. Period. If they want to let him build one, then cool. Go for what you know.

But since this is his very first time even thinking about a build, myself as a parent would say no. If it suits the student better to have a desktop, then look into buying one.

JUST NOT DELL!

maybe something from these guys... or another one that will let you customize a machine. next best thing to biulding it yourself... You pick the parts and they put it together... it's covered under warrenty, etc...
The only thing you would have to do is the research of the parts...
