that will depend on what your parents let you get... you can build one and get what you want... OR if they say you need to buy one (warrentee and all) you can still get a killer deal.

what do you want out for your system... what do you like? media? games? video encoding? etc... do you like AMD of INTEL?

do a search and read some of the threads for AMD vs INTEL and see what you like. go to Newegg and check out some of the parts there.

honestly.. check out what other people have got and see what they have... most of it is personal preference and then you can figure out why...

$1,500 is enough to get him a high-end machine.

provided he knows whats hes doing when he gets the parts, so he does not zap them

doesn't really matter what he plans on doing, or whether he likes amd or intel, its all about core 2 duo if its in his budget, and it is! so problem solved. only thing to keep in mind now is that fact that he'll prolly also need a monitor. doing it all under $1500 is very possible...

Dell *shudder*. If a monitor is included I would probably factor in an AM2 system since it still is very nice and would allow you to spend osme more for a nice wide monitor.

The Conroe is cheap. It will last a HELLUVA longer time than any ***** A64 right now.

And what kind of a computer suits a STUDENT? A64 or Conroe? See what a pointless question that was?

Well. If he gets a e6400 and a cheap $150 mobo. Also if he getts a x1800xt then he will have enough to get everything he needs. Just around $1500. JUst bug the **** out of your parents and then they will get want you want.
