Yeah, one less unneeded wire. I have asked other pc enthusiast, and no one seems to know what we need them for any more.

I think they might be usable but are just not actually used anymore by the software

Alright, what function do they provide? I have been able to function just well with out it. But what confuses me is that sound cards come with three or four connections, and so do motherboards with onboard sound.

Prolly something to do with uploading all our personal information to Microsoft. They've got a deal with Sound Blaster I bet.

well i have a play button on my DVD drive, and i can assure you, i can still play CD's without any software, and without the dedicated Cable, someone told me once that windows XP is smart enough now not to need them, i guess he was right.
