Default Upgrading my rig

I really like to encode and burn dvds from divx files, mp4's, etc. I currently have a P4 640 3.2 with a gig of DDR2-3200 (yeah, i know, really slow ram), and a Geforce 6600. I was thinking of upgrading to a Core 2 duo, and a new motherboard. But someone told me that despite conroe's benchmarks, the Athlon X2 is still ideal for encoding dvd's. is this guy right, or just crazy, which i think he is.

Intel has always been better at encoding. That hasn't changed.
