Hello, new to the forums here.

I would like to know if its posible to upgrade the CPU on my Gateway DX4200-UB001A.

PC specs: Gateway Support - Specifications

Motherboard specs: ????????????????

As you can see the current CPU is a Phenom 9550 2.2Ghz X4. The motherboard supports AM2+ up to 95W.

I was thinking of upgrading to a AMD Phenom II X4 945 3.0GHz X4 AM3 95W: Newegg.com - AMD Phenom II X4 945 Deneb 3.0GHz 4 x 512KB L2 Cache 6MB L3 Cache Socket AM3 95W Quad-Core Processor - Processors - Desktops

I would like to know if I will have problems doing this upgrade taking into account that its an OEM PC with locked BIOS and its a move from AM2 to AM3 (though Ive read that AM3 CPUs are backwards compatible with AM2 motherboards).

Would I have to format my hard drive and reinstall Windows?

Unless there is an updated BIOS, you will probably get a bad mix with those 2.
