Default Thinkpad bios update

I have a thinkpad 380xd. I also have a thinkpad 390e, which used to work fine, but it doesn't work anymore. But it has either 128m or 96m of ram. It had 64m of extra ram added. I tried to take the expanded ram out of the bottom and put it in the 380xd, but it didn't accept the ram. I found a bios update on the ibm site and was wondering if the bios update would make the 380xd accept the ram?
