Default Standardizing an Image Procedure

Good title huh? Let's see if I can explain this with out too much confusion. I am currently working with the US Army over in the middle east as a civilian contractor. I am an ADPE Technician which is a fancy way of saying PC technician. My job is to enusre that the workstations and laptops on base are set up a certain way. We use ghost to image the computers but also try to repair whenever possible. My question is, if you have ever worked for the military or government doing this type of work did you use some kind of standardized procedure? We are using XP Pro with SP2 and then add all updates and a list of software. There is a general way we install the software but I was wondering if someone had better way. To make a system from scratch takes about 8 hours. With a new image we can completely redo a system in under an hour. Which includes adding it to the domain. So if you have any idea what I am talking about and have some tips to share let's hear them....
