go for the cheapest! RAM is RAM. i am guessing that he is not a hardcore PC user so it shouldnt make any difference either way what he gets.

Brands you wanna get are, like stated above, Corsair and OCZ, but Patriot and Geil are good also.
Since he wont overclock, go for Value Select ram, rather than performance.
