just bought a new case and am wondering if it matters which way i connect the power led hd led and power/reset connectors to the mother board because i cannot tell which side is the top or bottom. does it matter which way they are oriented? they all have a white cord accompanied by another color and its different for every connector.

If you look really close on the connector, it SHOULD have a very small arrow. That is usually your positive lead.

the only markings are on the bottom and its a S marked on the side with the colored wire. just out of curiosity, what would happen if one connected these wires improperly?

Nothing. Either it'll work, or it wont. You wont hurt anything by connecting the case buttons/led's wrong.
