Default PSU connectors

Can some one tell me the difference between having a power supply with a 20 pin connector and one with a 20+4 pin connector? Obviously it has another 4 pin connector besides the 20 pin connector, but does it mean that you could use it for a mobo that requires a 20 or a 24 pin connector? In other words... Is the 4 pin connector there if you have either power connectons?

The 20+4 is when you have the 4 extra pins on a wire, that can be used if you have the slot. The 4 extra pins are there if you have a PCIE motherboard.

I see, so 20+4 pin is just what you would call a 24 pin connector.
