i installed the drive but dont i need a driver ? can someone link me to it ?

You shouldn't need a driver if you have XP.

i have 98se

but i played a dvd in it fine. i just figured i'd need a "program" to "burn" something ? i didnt buy the retail version and it came with nothing but the drive and this being totally new to me i have no clue as to what i need.

Get a program like Nero Burning ROM.
