Default Gfx Card Overheating

After installing all kinds of drivers and finding one that I'm happy with and tweaking the settings for the card I still locked up when playing HL2. So I took the side off of my case and put the tower out in the open instead of stuck under my desk. Since I have done this I rarely lock up. Will overheating your gfx card cause it to lock up or is it most likely the drivers and tweaking settings that has helped the problem? If overheating is/was the problem, what is a good AGP card that will keep a pretty low ambient temp?
