Default External DVD burner

Bought one today and paid $115 for it. Salesman told me not to get one for $40 because they aren't as good. Is this true or do they work just as good? If not, what is the difference?

Opinions?

cheers

Cheaper one would have a cheaper laser within the drive. Down the track it would probably cause problems with unable to read DVD's and the like. Wouldn't be a massive difference between the two though. Salesman will always recomend the more expensive one (unless you find a decent one) as it is their job, which is why I do my own research into a product before I buy.

Hello,

I would have to agree with Tommy Boy on this. The more expensive one would have a better laser in it. But overall there really is no difference. Next time make sure to do some research on the matter.

Cheers,
Mak

That's a pretty big price difference. What kind of external drive were they selling for $40? A quick web search didn't turn up one that cheap. Internal drives are inexpensive, but external ones just aren't as popular anymore.
