Default DVD/RW Install problem

I went to a friends house to help him install his new dvd burner, mainly just to help him get the metal plate out so he could install it. But here's the thing we got the drive installed and started up the computer and XP found new hardware, but the drive keeps opening up the CD tray. It will not stay shut. You can close it and it will open right back up, Even with a disc in it. His other drive was on cable select so we put this one on cable select also. Will that make that drive keep opening up? What did we do wrong?
Thanks

Might just be a busted DVD drive... have you tried in on another machine ?

It sounds like the drive is busted. I have never heard of a tray continuously opening like this. Does it open and close all the time or does it just stay open ?

It will open and stay open until you close it, then it will open back up by its self.

IMO, it doesn't sound like an driver issue, however good practice would say update necessary drivers... Have you done this ?

Download the drivers on another machine and either transfer via floppy or cd.
