DVD drive not playing movies. Need software?

I took a DVD rom drive out of a old Dell for a new build. It works but wont play any movies. I take it i need software to watch a movie. Is there any free software out there?

Yes......Goto filehippo.com and enter K-lite into the search box there and download K-lite Codec Pack. No problems after that!

You can also try VLC. VLC media player - Overview

It will play anything, or at least all I have thrown at it.
