Default Difference between core 2 duo and quadcore

Hello I recently bought a brand new pc for the second time, i could nt able to upgrade my old one which i bought in 1996. Im a web developer and 3d animation specialist,Now my new system is perfectly working. I used to work in Maya 3d software, when I try to render the animation, still im not satisfied with the speed its ok for novice users but i have plenty of jobs to do in animation so i need a faster rendering processor, I want to know the difference between core 2 duo and quadcore processor, some say quadcore processor increase the speed by 4 times, core 2 duo processor increase by 2 times, i want to know the exact difference between the two processor.

CPU Charts | Tom's Hardware

That just shows how the quad performs fairly better in graphics and rendering when the software takes advantage of the quad core.
Not that it shows how they are different but it's something to think about since you are an animation specialist and whatnot.

don't think of the cores as "doubling" or "quadrupling" the speed as they don't they are faster then a single a cpu because they are more efficient. if you need plenty of raw power then the q6600 and overclock it

If you multitask AT ALL, get a quad. It makes everything run better.

Tom's Hardware CPU charts are not so reliable in my opinion

Here is a more reliable benchmark for Q6600 from AnandTech
AnandTech: Intel Core 2 Extreme QX6850 and Massive Price Cuts
