I dont have the restore cds, so I installed a fresh copy of xp home (2002 version) and put in the cd key that is in the case to go ahead and update windows. But it tells me that the key is invalid. please help. is there any other versions of xp home that i shoudl have installed?

Those CD-Keys only work with the OEM version of XP that you get from the manufacturer (Sony, in this case). I would contact Sony, and ask them to send you a XP install CD.
