Default 32gb barrier

is there a way to be certain if a BIOS is subject to the 32gb barrier without testing a hdd. the computer in question has a BIOS file dated around mid 1998 which is when the problem was supposedly corrected and i would simply prefer a software method rather than obtaining and then installing a drive to check.

your motherboard/IDE controller needs to support LBA and/or ECHS
and you need at least NTFS if you're on Windows 2000 or above. 98 will format drives more than 32GB on FAT32 though.
