Default Re: Please Help Remove Albus.sys and Alsmt.exe virus

Hello,

Step 1 | ComboFix

Download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.
Read first: "How to download and use ComboFix"
If you downloaded ComboFix previously, delete that version and download it again as the tool is frequently updated!
  • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.
  • Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply
  • Be sure to re-enable your anti-virus and other security programs, after ComboFix finished.
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall.

Extra-Note: Please, DO NOT use ComboFix on your own. It is a very powerful tool designed to deal with sophisticated infections and if something goes wrong or you use it incorrectly, you could possibly lose the use of your computer. It is ONLY meant to be used under the direct supervision of a malware removal specialist. Please read Combofix's Disclaimer

Logs needed in next post:

ComboFix

Cheers,
Mak

Default Re: Please Help Remove Albus.sys and Alsmt.exe virus

Hello Mak,

Thanks for your help. I've followed your instruction to run ComboFix and I'm not sure the program was ran successfully at the end.

I printed out the ComboFix installation guide and followed the steps written in the guide. (closed all windows, disable all anti-virus program and I even turned off windows XP firewall).

The ComboFix showed it was completed at stage_41. However, it also showing a long page of C:\windows\.....\Trijix...\...ula files?? Some of the entries were showing some weird numbers like 0.1.0.7 something like that.

Then the program stopped right there and I didn see any screen saying "preparing the log report" or any other dialog box which they mentioned in the guide.

I waited well over 20 mins trying to see if anything would happen, but it didn't. So I had to manually close the ComboFix blue screen and manually shut down the computer and reboot it.

Fortunately, the window rebooted successfully without a hitch. The window's error message is gone and I ran the IceSword program, the red entry pointed to Albus.sys are gone. Now the computer seems abit of quicker at start up.

But, I didnt find any ComboFix log.

Please let me know your opinion on this. Before running the ComboFix, it acclaimed that 1 out of 100 wouldn't go through the scanning process, so I guess my computer is that one out of 100?

I appreciate your help.

Hello,

It happens at times. ComboFix doesnt complete. What i do in those instances is have the user reboot into Safe Mode and run it again. But i will leave that up to you. You say that the entries are gone and the system is faster. So it is your choice on what you want to do. I am just glad to help out.

Cheers,
Mak

So would you feel that I should run the ComboFix again in safe mode?

Is it keep tabbing F8 in order to go into safe mode during booting?

Also, are there any free anti-melware software that I can download?

I'm currently using AVG Free edition, and it didn't protect my computer from the Albus.sys thing. Kinda disappointed.

Hello,

If you say that he PC is running better then i would not be so worried to run it. It is just a method used to double check. But yes you would hit F8 after the POST (BIOS Screen Flash) and before Widnos starts to load.

As for free coverage. Avast! would be my recommendation. It has a preboot scanner that runs. Could prove to be of use to you.

Cheers,
Mak

I would also reccomend Avast!. The virus definitions are updated frequently and the software is free for non-commercial use.

avast! 4 Home Edition - FREE antivirus software - Download

Cheers,

Thanks

No no no. Never run two A/V's together. Causes no end of problems

If you wish to try Avast! unintall AVG first then run the installer.
