Default using ipod for storage

so i want to use my 30gb ipod as a storage disk so i can transfer some files that are bigger than a dvd to a computer not on my network. I have roughly 6.5gb free, and i want to put a 5.14gb file and a few other small files. however even when i try to place say a 5mb file it constantely gives me the error "the disk in the destination drive is full" no im a little concerned because it will let me put say 15 small 100kb files. and i had no trouble with my old 20gb 4th gen before it died on me. anyone have any suggestions?
