Default ATI HD4870 suffering from premature deaths

Quote:
The Radeon HD 4870 cards have only been available on retail shelves for a couple of days but already a handful of owners are complaining their card died prematurely.

A topic with complaints about 4870s biting the dust can be read at XtremeSystems Forums. Several guys report their card died within 48 hours, some of the problems were caused by a corrupt BIOS flash but in other cases it doesn't seem to be related to overclocking, overvolting or flashing the BIOS as one user points out he was running at stock and another unfortunate user reports he has four dead Radeon HD 4870 cards:
Got 4 dead here, as well.

To fuel the fire and speculation, both sets we have died in Crossfire mode. (may be a trend from the looks of it)
This happened to Radeon HD 4870 cards from various brands and because there haven't been any reports of dead Radeon HD 4850 cards it seems safe to assume this issue isn't related to the RV770 GPUs.

We're not sure what makes the 4870 cards die as there's insufficient data but at this point the GDDR5 memory is the main suspect. If you have a dead Radeon HD 4870 please report about it in our comment section and tell us how it happened.

UPDATE: It turns out that most (if not all?) of the Radeon HD 4870 deaths can be attributed to a failed BIOS flash. The reason why this wasn't clear at first is because the problem only arises after a cold boot. If that's the case you can get a fix for your card at Techpowerup.

this has already been wrapped up on xs. It was a bios flash and people were basically just lying that they did anything to the cards and blaming ati.

As gurusan stated, this is not a problem, just lies, further more there is a work around to manually adjust fan speeds that has worked for alot people.

There will come a day, such a day when all will be told more than they wish to know, what one hears may explain the past, it may explain the future, but it has never made a difference either way and it will change nothing. Some day.... But that is not this day, and I don't know when, I just don't know.

Man, these new ATI cards have brought out so much hate in the forums. Yes the ATI cards are great. The nvidia cards are overpriced. But theres really no reason to have this much animousity over it. I havent seen this much fanboy trolling and flaming since that ps3/bluray guy got banned.

I for one like the GTX 280's. They are really fast cards. The problem they have is not that they're bad, it's that they have to compete against cards that are almost as fast, and very CHEAP.

I like Nvidia, I like ATI, and I like AMD. I don't like Intel as a business, and I've stated why. It isn't because I think their current products are bad.

I personally don't see why one would dislike ATI, hence why I'm asking someone who does what their reasons are. It was and is a genuine question....

Well thats sad... but I read the update too... so its the owners fault for flashing it, they should have known the risk...

but who cares about that.. they still perform well for their price, and theres always RMA

Agreed. I moved the off topic discussion to its own thread. Let's try to stay focused in this one.
