because they are stupid. Titanium isn't desired for it's hardness, but for it's strength to weight ratio and it's very high melting point. Titanium is about as string as low grade steel but 45% stronger. Remember that strength does not equal hardness. Titanium is very ductile. That means it's easy to deform. The fact that it is light weight and melts at very high temperatures makes it great for aircraft that have to go greater than Mach 2. That is why planes like the SR-71 and spacecraft tend to use it a lot.

Yamaha used titanium for it's four stroke header pipes for a while (dirt bikes). Eastern bmx company also has a titanium frame, crank, and bars.
