Default Topic Closed by jaksback?

making backups of games is illegal. topic closed....

no jaksback, making one backup copy of software that you own is very legal.

Yes. U.S. Copyright laws allow you to make one backup copy of software you own. However, that backup copy is "tied" to your original. If you sell or give away your original software, you must destroy your backup copy or package it with the orignal when you sell or give it away. Likewise, you may not sell or give away your backup copy without the original.

Meh, I don't see why it matters. If someones going to do it illegally, they will do it even with a closed thread But nonetheless, I'm pretty sure it's legal but too lazy to look (hah!). I don't think anyone cares if you make a copy of the original and own it...but generally speaking that is not the case, so that's probably what was assumed ! I know for myself, I have a few games that I copied, and if I had not, I would no longer have a useable version (brothers, friends, myself now and then, you know, LIFE!)...so...yeah, I'll copy my games for myself if and when I want.

It is definately legal to make a backup as long as you dont distribute it. It must have just been an honest misunderstanding

LoL. homeland security destroy all of that.

Me I back all of my game up to the hard drive with alcohol (it rip it as a .iso or .mdf file)120. I can play the game from the hard drive without needing the cd. I can do 32 games to one computer at once. now if my cd get damage or scratched i can burn another disc from that file. I lost frogger2 before as it got scratch up. I won' t lose a game in this manner again

i actually used to do that, but it takes up an insane amount of space, esp. for games like HL2. I think a good idea for companies is to offer a cd replacement service for a little bit of cash as long as you have the proof of purchase. Like what if I lost cds 2 and 5 to HL2... that would suck.
