Default Who's got the biggest house here?

Get a Reg logo on Google maps and win $10,000

Those of you who want to take Google ads to the next level may be interested in a deal offered by Los Angeles radio host Phil Hendrie. The comic has put up a large lump sum to anyone who can have their banner spotted from space by Google maps.

"You know, I have this plan," Hendrie said, during a broadcast this month.

"Do you ever do Google maps? Okay, you know how they have the satellite picture of the whole world, right. I've got a standing offer for $10,000 for anybody who puts sign on the roof of their house big enough that it can be seen by the satellite on Google maps."

While often sarcastic and satirical, Hendrie sounded very serious about this offer. And we think it provides a fine opportunity for Register readers to claim the cash prize.

You could, of course, make a sign to promote your good name or company. But why not plug El Reg instead? Pick from any of our fine logos and get cracking on that massive banner.

Should you win Hendrie's cash, we'll be sure to complement the sum with goods from our vast stores. And, if you're nearby, we'll take you out for a dinner.

We have little doubt that one of you can dominate this contest. You have, after all, proven to be the finest Google map experts on the planet.

The sign itself will cost $10,000. Also, the images of my area which google uses are low quality. You can see my valley, but you can't see my house...not to mention that they're around 10 years old. So, if you want to put a huge add on the top of your house for 10 years just hoping that it'll be seen by a sattelite...then by all means, feel free to give it a try.

actually if you use that google earth program the images are pretty clear.

that's my old highschool

Yeah I live in the high desert of california, so that's why everything you see is DEAD

Buuuut yeah, a banner the size of that school would be insane and $10,000 wouldn't even compensate you.

I'm pretty sure I coulda gotten in closer too....I remember looking at japan and you can see the people getting onto the airplanes at the airport quite clearly...you can get probably 300 feet from it lol

Some areas (often less populated ones I would assume) have much older images though, so the program can't magically clear up an old zoomed image. Clarity depends on the specific images, not the method of viewing.

Anyhow, when I input my address into Google maps, it's about a third of a block off. Still neat though, I definitely can identify where I live clearly enough.
