Default Tai Chi: Asskicking martial art?

I know about Tai Chi. Its slow graceful movements and etc... etc... But what other benefits does it hold besides spiritual growth or whatever. Does it burn calories? Is it an effective self-defence discipline?

It looks interesting. I have a choice of taking Tai Chi or Tae Kwon Do at my local YMCA. Don't know which one yet, but Tai Chi is reserved for adults, and I'm sure theres a reason for it.

Tai Chi as far as i know is a form of Martial arts but its not to be used for fighting i think. but as all forms of the arts there not made for fighting if one does well its to disarm. I know there are certian monks that do Tai Chi and man you dont want to mess with them.

As far as I'm concerned Tai Chi is more of a spiritual stuff, energies in a body etc. Surely it burns calories, but I wouldn't count on it in a moment of self defence. Slo-mo may look cool, but... Tae Kwon Do on the other hand is a traditional martial art and involves lots of kicking. So, you have to decide between a Bruce Lee style *** kicking action and calm meditative concentrating.
