Default Re: So, are we all going to die in 6 days?

The best analogy I found to explain whether or not the LHC will kill us all was this:

Quote:
CERN’s chief scientific officer, Jos Engelen, is from the Netherlands. He serves under the director general, who is from France, and alongside the chief financial officer, who is from Germany. I went to speak to Engelen in his office; behind his desk a chart indicated when the various parts of the collider are supposed to be completed. It was a crazy quilt of multicolored blocks, with lines radiating in all directions. Engelen greeted me with a half-ironic cheerfulness that struck me as very Dutch. Among his responsibilities is dealing with the frequent calls and letters CERN receives about the possibility that the Large Hadron Collider will destroy the world. When I asked about this, Engelen picked up a Bic pen and placed it in front of me.

“In quantum mechanics, there is a probability that this pen will fall through the table,” he said. “All of a sudden, it will be on the floor. Because it can behave as a wave, it can go through; we call that the ‘tunnel effect.’ If you calculate the probability that this happens, it is not identical to zero. It is a very small probability. But it never happens. I’ve never seen it happen. You have never seen it happen. But to the general public you make a casual remark, ‘It is not identical to zero, it is very small,’ and . . . ” He shrugged.
tldr; It'll kill us if some Dutch bloke's biro falls through his desk...

I have arrived...

A black hole is still some what of a mystery to physics as to where the matter goes when it passes the event horizon of the black whole, I did hear a while ago on a science program on radio 4 that it is quite possible that the matter can turn into dark matter (what supposedly accounts for 90% of the matter in our universe) another postulates that there might be a white whole that is yet to be discovered that would return the matter back to the universe.

The super colder though is a nice experiment, it would not produce a black whole if it did it would be so small it would have virtually no lifespan a couple of nano seconds at most, this isn't man playing at god because it's science an not religion. The big bang is a mystery that needs to be understood it's where we come from an could provide answers to some of the most fundamental questions we have where we came from an where we are going not as a people but as a unerverse. I dare any one to say that they are questions that don't need to have answers, for all we know if could prove that what we know is wrong an lead us to a new generation of discovery an innovation.

since when did black holes create dark matter o.O

Dark matter is a theory, too.

As i said it's just one guy's therory I didn't get to listen to the whole of his theory.

There is alot of mass tied up in Black holes (Dark Stars), one theory attributes the missing mass problem to black holes..

There will come a day, such a day when all will be told more than they wish to know, what one hears may explain the past, it may explain the future, but it has never made a difference either way and it will change nothing. Some day.... But that is not this day, and I don't know when, I just don't know.

All I can say is they spent a lot of money on this thing, and if it doesn't do something amazing, spectacular or devastating, those folks credibility will take a huge hit. Honestly, they built this thing just to see what happens if you do this. I tossed a small can of lighter fluid into a fire once to see what would happen. After I burned 2/3 of the backyard, I got my backside torn up by my dad.

Whats with all the petimisticism (real word ?) I dunno about you, but i would LOVE to die in a black whole. The most interesting part of my life, it would be a great spectcale, to see the atoms of everything around your ripped from there larger structure

Funny thing is, i bet $10 that superdaves little 'experiement' was over 1,000,000x cheeper and 100x more interesting to watch.

I don't think it creates dark matter. I thought it shoots x-rays out of it's sides, and that's how we recognize them.

The black isn't hole the object emiting the differing spectrums of light, it is the large amounts of matter falling into and past the event horizen.

At times, there is so much matter and mass falling in, that not all of it can fall in at the same time this causes gas jets, highly charged and speeding particals that is/are so hot that they emited X rays and sometimes even Gamma rays. (And many others wavelengths of light..)

Black holes that have little to no mass or matter at or near the event horizen, and have nothing orbiting them cannot be detected to date..
