Default Question of ethics....

So, I'm a 3rd year structural engineering student and I'm looking to get an internship this summer. Yesterday I went to the engineering job fair and got a lot of attention from a company called "Bath Iron Works", which is a pretty big deal. They're in defense and build destroyers for the navy. It would be a great experience and would look great on my resume, not to mention insane pay, but as an idealist and typically anti-war, I'm feeling rather apprehensive about this.

Any advice?

Hello,

Well if you're not going to take the internship, then someone else will. Having said that, it depends if you're comfortable with it.

True, and it is only structural engineering.... of a boat... so it's not like it's a missile or something.

War or anti-war, you can think what you like, but if you dont do it someone else will. Might as well take the opportunity.

Guns (or battleships) don't kill people... people kill people. Besides, contrary to what Tony Stark said at the beginning of Iron Man, the best weapon is the one you never have to use.

I wouldn't have a problem with working for them and my world view is decidedly different than most on here. A battleship consists of a lot more than just the guns on board.

Nice reference. It's kind of strange if you step back and look at all of this; in that we're just a virus with shoes killing time. You can say energy is "wasted" on defense, but it gives people something to do and advance in, even if they are never used.

You are not doing the killing...and war is unfortunately necessary in this world we live in...without war you cant have peace. Just take the internship...its not like you are a military leader making the decision to invade a country or fire upon an enemy.
