Default PC controllers with USB built in OR adapters?

Not sure if I posted in the wrong place, sorry if I did...

QUESTION: WHICH IS BETTER?

(A) Specifically made PC controllers with USB built in OR ....
(B) Is it ok to simply get an "USB adapter drive" enabling an existing XBOX or Playstation controller for game playing on a laptop/desktop computer. Note: I believe the downside of the "adapter" is the requirement of installing the new external adapter drive (I guess something about software or something like that, but it doesn't seem all that bad either)

I recently picked a total of four (4) controllers: two (2) xbox controllers AND two (2) playstation down at ROSS (the clothing store). All four are made by HIP GEAR

I was checking out EBAY and noticed many of these adapter accessories.

the xbox controllers are too easy to mod to a USB plug anyway as the controller is USB already. just buy a USB cable that has a male plug on both ends and cut it in half, cut the plugs off the end of the xbox controllers and match the colours to the USB plugs

Thanks for the input nitestick.

But what if I want to preserve the xbox controller in it's factory condition ? I guess it really comes back down to my initial post .

For those who would like some extra input on nitestick's method, here's a link (with photos) of someone carrying out the same exact technique; note: it's going to take a WHILE to load so you REALLY have to have patience.... (or simply hit Ctrl+N to bring up another web-browser and let the other continue to load while you go about browsing again in the newly opened window)

If you get an xbox extender cable you can butcher that without touching the controller's wire.

or you can do what i did on an old controller. us a USB extension cable (i.e. socket at one end plug at the other) to replace the xbox controllers "in-line" release with the usb socket and plug. of course putting the plug on the controller side rather than the controller plug side. that way you have a usb controller with an adapter for use on the xbox. the adapter you make can also be used for flash drives to use as memory cards so basically i see this as the best all around solution. if i can borrow a DC some time soon i'll post pics of one i made

I have a logitech one that is almost exactly like a ps2 controller, I like it a lot, just get one of them for like 20 bucks.
