Default Movie/Game Ratings

In my Language Arts class, we are currently doing persuasive essays. I have chosen to persuade that there is something currently wrong with the way the ESRB and MPAA rate games/movies, and that it needs to be reformed. I haven't really started working too much on it because I have to finished a book report for that class before I forcus more attention on it.

I was wondering if anyone had any opinions about this? Possibly any links to help me out? Also, counter arguements are greatly welcome.

Thanks.

They should just get rid of the ESRB and MPAA ratings. Nobody really pays attention to them. When I was about 13 years old, I bought an M-rated game from gamestop, and they didn't care.

Over the last few years, I feel that we have become more immune to violence. Every year it seem that some one is alway raising the bar when it comes down to voilence.
Like compair movies like RoboCop (1988 - Rated <R>) with movies like Hostel (2006 - Rated <R>)

Back them, RoboCop with it violence and swearing was pretty hard one. Let alone that there is at least 2 scenes where you have some one getting turned into a puddle with automatic gun fire.
Move that to today where we have Hostel where it movie is about a club of people that showly torture to death young adults.

i know movie ratings ARENT required by law, its just another way for people to know what they are getting themselves into... productions companies barter with the ratings simply to appeal to certain audiences. to todays standards i dont believe showgirls would be nc-17 actually i dont even think thats a rating anymore, but in consideration to games, i do think its a good idea of ratings (althouugh not fun if u are a 14 yr old trying to buy san andreas) but you can always get an older brother or friend to buy it for you... kids arent being parented by people these days, just by orginizations such as esrb n mpaa
