Default The more adequete Description of "Hacker"

Those defintions were from Marrian-Webster online. www.m-w.com

I guess another question to ask is whether or not you dislike being referred to as a "hacker"?

Myself, the term tends to lend to the connotation of the destructive type. Therefore, being referred to as a hacker offends me.

Depending upon which group you may be in, or who composes your circle of friends, might make the difference in what one means by the word, or how one takes being called that.

Most of the people around here would take hacker like you said, as one that is destructive. It may not be fair to all that it have a negative connotation, but it seems that it does.

actually hacker is a term the media used to describe a "cracker", no not a white guy, someone who "cracks" into computers and either steals data, or uses malicious code on the system. "Hackers" by original definition are those who are active in the advancement of personal computers.

1 : one that hacks
Considering that I USED to play AD&D, I can agree to that. Eg. HACK-MASTER, Dungeon Hack.
How ever, not common slang.

Quote:
2 : a person who is inexperienced or unskilled at a particular activity
W.T.F.? I have never heard that one before.

Quote:
3 : an expert at programming and solving problems with a computer
No. I don't think so.
Computer Cracker more like it.

Quote:
4 : a person who illegally gains access to and sometimes tampers with information in a computer system
I agree with that one.

A hacker used to be someone who was particularly adept at gettng into the guts of a computer to sort out tricky problems. A 'Cracker' was always someone malicious. Therefore you could be both.

However the media seems to have settled upon the title of 'Hacker' as the malicious one, hence most of the world believe 'Hacker' to be a malicious term.

A hacker is one someone who is a computer expert....it's as simple as that. They have knowledge of many operating systems, programming languages, protocols, etc. (and use that knowledge to gain access to...in most cases...a remote network)

If you wanna get into all the White Hat, Black Hat bs, then a white hat hacker is someone who hacks, but is not destructive. A black hat is destructive.

I agree with definition 4 also.
