Default If you're going to sell a car, don't fall for this scam

I've put up my car for sale, and people have tried to scam me with "Cashier's Checks" that don't work. The first time I knew nothing about this scam. Some guy called from Toronto and said he wanted to buy my car. Without even seeing a picture of it (I didn't post a picture, just a description). I asked for $1500.00, he sent me a check for $4900.00. He said to cash the check and to send the remainder of the money to an address in Utah. wtf??? He would have had a local shipping company pick up the car. I took the check to the bank but it couldn't be verified. So I told him no way. I listed my car again and I got 2 offers.

Here's the first:

Hello, i am Daniel williams, i came a cross your add when i
was surfing the net and i am interested in buying your car for my first
son in Southafrica whose birthday will be coming up shortly. i want to
know if you will accept a certified check as the mode of payment. i
would also want to know if you would accept a local pick-up by our
shipping agent as this car is to be shipped directly to him in Southafrica
.please let me know your final asking price for the car, your Phone
Number, and the Name and Address to which the certified cheque should be
made out to and i will be waiting for your response as soon as possible.
Regards.Daniel

Here's the second:

This is a purchase request notification for your car placed on
Internet, infact i am satisfied with the detailed informations posted with
it. However, first of all let me use this opportunity to introduce
myself to you, i am ALEXANDER, i am a procurement agent, i specialize on
the purchase of items round the globe on behalf of my respective clients
especially as it is upon their request. Furthermore, prior to placing
an order for it, i would like you to furnish me further with the
following enquiries; "How long have you been using it?. -Your reason for
selling it?. -It's picture for closer look. -Your final asking price
excluding the shipping cost as you need not worry about shipping this will be
handled by my respective local shipper who will come down to your place
of location for an immediate pickup as soon as payment is received.
-It's location for pickup immediately payment is made -If a CERTIFIED
CHECK to be drawn from a US BANK is acceptable as means of payment. Lo
oking forward to doing business transaction with you in good faith and
trust, God bless.
Best Regard
N.B{ you can as well send me your address and phone number for the
transaction to take place very fast ok}
***Alexander

I told them both no way CA$H ONLY I've been scammed before. If you attempt to cash the check and your bank actually gives you money, they will find out eventually that the check is invalid and will charge your account leaving you without a car and the money they sent to you in the "cashiers check". I saw this on the news after the first one happened. Some guy got burned big time because of this. Just wanted to let you guys know.

No, this is important. Cash only and be sure both parties have a receipt so nothing comes back to bite you in the *** later.

Good to know.. Cheques are evil.... So I take it, even after "cashing it", the bank can later take back the money? Didn't know that.

Here is what snopes had to say about it.

According to them, this is a real scam, and people have lost money on it. It also explains how the scam works.

I wasn't implying that this wasn't important. I was just simply asking who stole my noose so that I can hang the *******s who do this.
