Default I soon get confused but.....

...this one drove me scatty. I have a five year old computer running Windows 98SE. My wife has a four year old computer running XP. Because I'm due to change mine, and the fact that Floppy drives are disappearing we decided to get some new cd-rw's to transfer my floppies (about 100) to. I bought 10 RW's plus a memory stick to start getting the hang of things. I have had a CD-RW disc for a couple of years but mainly write to ordinary CD-R's - but what I'm saying is that I've used both types on my computer. When I tried to download information to one of the new CD's my computer couldn't see it and just showed a nag screen to say that there was no CD. When I tried it in the XP machine, the screen showed that there was a CD ready for copying to but half way through trying to copy the burner just stopped and put up a nag screen which sort of said that the CD wasn't suitable. I tried a couple of other new CD's and they were the same so I tried the old CD-RW disc and that worked OK. I took one of the new CD's to a friend of mine and he had the same problem on his main computer apart from getting the extra information that the CD was 'RAW' suggestiing that it wasn't formatted. He put it into his new laptop which had a Nero burner and that gave the option to format. After that he managed to write to the CD and then delete - so off I dashed back home thinking the problem had gone but no... the CD's still wouldn't function, and further more the computer screen showed that there was no space on the disc. I took them back to the shop in York, they were very helpful but none of the staff had heard of that problem before. Anyway I decided that I would carry on just using CD-R's for my major saves ie photos, and use memory sticks for other bits and pieces. When I got back home I had to download a special driver for Windows 98 but finally got the memory stick working - but only one memory stick will work on my computer but the others all work OK on the XP machine. At least one stick will have enough room for me to download my bits and pieces before I get a new computer.............. I'm going for a lie down now and some paracetamol ....

Have you installed a CD burner?

Do you have Nero or Roxio burning software installed?

Yep - both computers have a CD burner installed (but neither of the are Nero) - I use them to write to the older CD-RW . It was suggested in the shop that the box of CD's that I got was a faulty batch - I think it's happened to them before. but thanks for the suggestion talldude.

Perhaps it's because the CDs aren't being finalised.

Sounds like time for an external harddrive.

you need a program to burn files to CD's
a popular one is Nero Burning ROM, which is not free, though it comes with many CD burners

Windows XP has a CD burning wizard
to use it, right click on a file, click "send to" and then click on your CD burner

a balloon will pop up in the bottom right corner saying something like "you have files ready to be written to CD"
click that balloon, and just follow the prompts when the CD burning wizard comes up

Yep - done all that mate - I have even written to another make of CD-RW successfully - it just seemed to be that batch of CD's that I had bought at the weekend.
