I would recommend a preamp. I'm no expert but I do have a USB Tascam US122 unit, it has 2 line ins and 2 microphone ports. Going from guitar-amp-tascam sounded absolutely flawless when I used to record for peeps.

that isn't a pre-amp, that is an interface. A pre-amp is a device that amplifies a signal so that it can be processed.
