For something more modern, I highly suggest Queens of the Stone Age, I really like them, some of their more obscure songs are awesome and their style varies from pop-rock to heavy grunge and metal, they record with a lot of guest musicians, such as Dave Grohl doing some of his typically catchy drumming on several tracks on Songs for the Deaf album and Mark Lanegan also doing some work that's is simply amazing.
Check out: A Song for the Deaf, Song for the Dead, God is in the Radio, Go With the Flow, Millionaire, Mexicola, Feel Good Hit of the Summer, I Think I Lost My Headache, Mosquito Song, Everybody Knows That You're Insane, Tangled Up in Plaid, The Blood is Love, You Would Know
Mars Volta too, is another band I'd suggest (haven't totally gotten into them yet though): Concertina, Roulette Dares, two very great songs, instrumentally and in style,
back to classic rock though, I won't go into details, but check out The Who, The Doors, Rolling Stones, Iggy Pop, Pink Floyd, Guns N' Roses, Jimi Hendrix, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Jefferson Airplane, Queen, Wings, Cream, ah the list goes on... I guess just check those out for now.
