Angry Funny thing about "case keys"

I have a Thermaltake Soprano as the case of my new rig. And I got 2 sets of keys to it. One for the CD/DVD/floppy front panel and the other for the side panel. So it's cool, ya know.

A buddy of mine was over at my place the other day and he own a Thermaltake Shark. So anyway buddy has his case keys on his keychain (don't ask me why  ).. So he decided to try them keys on my case. And the bloody things worked!. Both sets... I mean, what the ****?..

They weren't even the same "type" of cases!

I don't understand the point of case keys...if someone really wanted to steal something from your computer they'd just unplug it and run off with the whole box and then cut the case open with a dremel or something...I really doubt someone is going to go to the trouble of opening the case and snatching out a specific part

You can pick those locks behind your back anyway, they're pointless really I think.

I think the real purpose is actually to keep kids away and such. Ya know, when you have guests over and the little tykes are running loose, you don't want them to like mess up your "precious"..

It's just annoying how TT says they are "keys" but don't really make them keys. It's like they give everyone a "master key".. .. They should've just made it some kind of child proof lock and be done with it.

Of course, that would've probably gotten a lot of complaints from various "new computers users", saying it is frikkin difficult to get the case opened...

Kinda like older compaq's. I had to read the instructions to get one apart.

I personally don't bother with case keys......... since the people I live with do not know how to bypass my BIOS password, and even then, you would have to figure out the password into Windows.

funny you mention that.........I just put mine on my keychain about 2 days ago but I had just had my case keys laying around for the longest time and almost start to forget where I put em....so I just put it on there so I'd know where it is.

But yeah, the front panel only prevents someone from stealing an optical drive anyway......it wouldn't keep me from stealing your other parts Well that only applies to my case anyway, it didn't have a side panel lock, but then again I leave my side panel off anyway

Them locks aren't hard to get by.... A little paper clip in it and at an angle can easily move the pins up and turn it... The locks are not very sensitive.... Thats how it was on the last two cases i worked with.... But you can allways go to a hardware store and look around for a lock that is different....
