Default Do they think im stupid.

I bought 256mb of SDRAM (PC133) brand new around a month ago from a local computer shop for a resonable price and i was happy. It went into my P3 system. A few days ago i wanted to do something with my idle p3 system so i download a copy of linux and put the cd in and i get a kernal panic on bootup (its like a BSOD in windows, but ususally means there is a hardware problem). So i change the ram for a 32mb stick and it works fine without a Kernal Panic. So i go down to the shop, give it to the guy and he takes it upstares and blows some compressed air on it to get rid of the dust, and tests it. He comes down and says it works fine. I ask if he can proove it and i go up with him and he puts it into the system, and boots and he says "its POST'd which is the first sign there is no problem with the ram" then he goes into dos and and into Norton Ghost and he says that the ram is fine because Norton does a ram test. I thought this was BS and i said: "ill take it home and run memtest and if there are errors ill bring it back" and he said "memtest is crap, i dont trust it" and then i left. Back at home i downloaded Memtest and ran it and it found the first 120mb was fine, but from there on it was all bad. It had counted 120,000 errors. So i brought it back and disgruntly he gave me anther stick marked 256mb PC 133. I take it home and it turns out its only a 128mb Stick marked incorrectly. So i go back and tell them this and he goes upstares and comes back saying: "Thats all the ram we have, we can order some more in for you" and i say "No, i want a refund" and then he says that thats against store policy. So now i have a credit that im gunna use to buy a DL DVD Burner.

These people think its a joke, they think im stupid. They say they test the memory with Norton Ghost and then they give me incorrectly marked ram. Its funny though because he was insistent on the fact that Memtest was bad and the ram was fine and the faults where because of my motherboard (i try a 32mb stick in that same mobo with no errors)

linux is very intolerant of bad ram, windows isnt, but windows crashes with the smallest little power glitch, linux doesnt, just one of those weird issues

That's because they usually can. 90% of the people going to a computer expo are computer morons, or grandparents looking for some great "drivers" to play their photo CDs.

Real techies don't talk to people when they go to expos (if they go at all). We just go in, poke around, and usually leave disgusted. If I do any talking at all, it's to try and disuade people from buying things from bad vendors.

Once I was at a trade show, and this guy was about to buy this 24 inch LCD from a vendor. The vendor told the guy that the line of one-color pixels going across the screen was part of the picture that was just made clearer by the "awsome clarity of the screen." I told the guy who was buying it what the real problem was, the vendor overheard and tried to nail me with a package of blank CD-Rs.

Heehee. He got like no sales the rest of the day!

Not really sure how Linsux compensates for people buying lame hardware and PSU's...I wouldn't know, I've never put cheap hardware near my box and I use a proper SP&B.

Shoobie please dont express your Linux opinions that way, it really doesnt work well.

Than we will have AMD vs Intel, Nvidia vs ATI and Linux vs Windows.

Yeah, I know. Linux people are allowed to slander Windows every chance they get, but yer not allowed to do the same in reverse, huh?
