Angry After a while, computer won't log onto the internet

Hello everyone. I've got an older computer that I upgraded with XP Pro about 4 months ago. I've got cable modem service and things have been working pretty good up until about 3 days ago.

After a while, the computer seems to "time out" and won't connect to the internet. It doesn't matter if I log out and log back into any user, it won't reconnect. I end up having to shut the computer down and then, finally it'll connnect. Very frustrating!

When I say "a while", it can be if I leave the computer without logging off and then come back after an hour or so. Or, like just happened, I was working with a disc in the cd rom and I was connected to the internet printing work related materials. After I was done, I decided to get onto the internet and the computer wouldn't connect   . Can anyone tell me what's wrong? Thanks.

My wife and I just went through the computer because we thought that we had some virus software. We were wrong. We found a lot of McAfee stuff in "program files" but nothing installed and we couldn't figure out how to or if there is even anything that can be installed. We tried to open up parts of it and most wouldn't open up.

New York Cheech, it doesn't seem like the modem or the Belkin router are the problem. Our wireless laptop connects just fine even when the pc doesn't want to connect. The only way that I can get my computer to reconnect to the internet when it starts acting up is to shut it down and then power it back up. Like I said earlier, this just started about 3 days ago  . Maybe I picked up some kind of virus?

No errors pop up. We don't suspect a modem, provider or router problem since our laptop has no problems whatsoever.

The problem has gotten much worse. Now, I can't even access the internet at all by clicking on Internet Explorer. I get the dreaded, "This page cannot be displayed" every single time now. Then, if I click on "Detect network settings" it will immediately access the internet . Also, if I try to go to any website in my address line, it will give me the same This page cannot be displayed message    . Arrrgggggggggggggg   !

When this happens go into DOS and type 'ipconfig /release', then 'ipconfig /renew'. Do you get your internet connection now?
