FAQ: The ins and outs of DoS attacks
by Elinor Mills

Thursday's denial-of-service attack that knocked Twitter offline for a few hours and affected Facebook, LiveJournal, and Google Sites and Blogger wasn't your average attack.

Typically, someone who has a bone to pick with a specific Web site will round up some hijacked PCs and use them to try to shut the site down. In this case, whoever was responsible was trying to block access to a specific user's accounts and not the sites themselves.

Funnily oldskool there is little or no evidence that it came from russia, he was just the most vocal person to complain. Some of the IP's where out of Russia but some of them where from the UK, France, America etc etc it was a higherd botnet attack little or nothing else of note other than some people couldn't find out that there mate just farted and used there iphone to inform every one.

Where Did All the Tweets Go? Security to the Core | Arbor Networks Security Interesting metrics of the attack, from the looks of it 50+ ISP's where exchanging 200MBPS of data with twitter before it had a brainfart.
