what to do about spyware?

I im building a computer and i dont want it to loose all of its performance capabilities due to spyware once i get it online. What are some good anti-spyware programs and where do i get them for cheap?

The ones I use are not really pro-active, but scan-and-remove.

AdAware and Spybot. Spybot does immunize your system against a bunch of stuff, though.

be sure to put on a good firewall and AV.
