Default update same as newer version?

hi,

I was wondering if having an old(er) but updated version of an anti-virus program is the same as a newer version. When updating the version doesn't go up and it basically just updates the virus database. So does that mean that it's always best to keep up with the newest versions out there or do the updates also enhance other stuff than just the database?
