Default Un-install Problem

My mates PC is a total mess, you have no idea how bad it is. He's had no security programs for about 3 years..absolutely nothing, seriously. How his computer was still running I have no idea. I installed Ad-Aware, Spyware Blaster, SpyBot Search & Destroy and AVG anti-virus.

Ad-Aware found 1119 problems (not all at once), SpyBot found over 300 problems..so many that when I went to fix them his computer crashed! And as soon as AVG was installed it found virus after virus after virus.

His computer now is in better shape but it's still pretty bad.

Right to the point. For some reason AVG no longer works. Every time he restarts his computer he get this window popping up saying that his AVG trial has finish. No idea why that comes up because I installed the free version, I'm sure of it. Anyway I went to un-install it as I'm going to get him some NOD32 but AVG wasn't in the 'add and remove programs' section. Weird. I went to 'Start', 'all programs' to look for it, but there was no sign of it. I had a look in program files, again, no sign whatsoever. So I downloaded it again and as I went to install it a message came up saying 'unable to install, some files maybe corrupted'. I downloaded a further two times (from different sites) and I got the same message!

Now I can 100% guarantee that the original AVG is still on his computer, as I can still open it up and do a scan by clicking on the icon which appears bottom right every time he restarts.

Has anyone got any idea what the problem could be, as I'm very suspicious he's got a NASTY virus..like I said, how his computer was still 'alive' was unbelievable!

Where could AVG be hiding and how will I find it to un-install?

PS. Again, it is definitely on his computer!

Sorry about all the trouble your friend is having but look in this folder: C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG Free
There will be a program in that folder called "setup.exe" that is AVGs install/uninstall program. Should be able to uninstall it that way. As far as the other problems... Wait until someone who knows gets here.

I found the folder mate but the was no 'setup.exe'. There is no files in the folder any larger than 400kb. I tried to delete the whole folder but it just keeps saying that certain files 'maybe in use by another person or program'

This i really starting to bug me now. Any more ideas how to get off his system?

Thanks, Parky.

Had another look in 'add ot remove programs' and I sorted them by 'size'...it appeared. When I went to un-install it, I got this message:

'An error occurred while trying to remove AVG Free Edition. It may have been already uninstalled.

Would you like to remove AVG Free edition from the Add or Remove programs lists?'
