I don't even use windows firewall or even an anti virus atm.

Well it's not the best out there. You could always download and install Comodo, it's free, and turn off the Windows one

i think the majority of people just use windows firewall along with the hardware one in their router.

Secure enough for me at least.

I use Comodo (v2.4; don't like v3.0 as much). Used ZA's firewall for a while, but I didn't like it as much.
