$ signs and blur

hi all, Apprciate any help that you can give.

My daughter's laptop boots upto first screen of $ signs then after that everything is burred including icons on desktop. Can't open anything. She has xp op system. What can she do. thanks

Can you boot into safe mode?
To do this, hold F8 while the computer is coming up, before the Windows XP splash screen, and select "Safe Mode" from the menu.

Thanks macdude. We have tried that but it does not work. Yesterday I was able to run an old version of adaware from desktop but it didn't have any effect.
