Default Right click installs Symantec

Or tries to. Every time I right click anything, an install box pops up trying to install Symantec. I have removed Symantec twice and ran their removal tool also. But it keeps coming back. Another reason to hate the most invasive, intrusive and over-rated A/V out there. Now, how do I make it stop? I have AVG and Avast both installed and have scanned with both. Both found problems and deleted the files. Ran Ccleaner also. I'll get a HijakThis log up soon. Oh, it's the same Gateway laptop that has been making me want to start drinking again for some time now running XP MCE.

Never heard this before superdave but sounds like there's something left over from the previous install of Symantec.

If you want to post a HJT log i'll happily have a look...

Well if the thing survives after I toss it in the pond...
The owner just brought me a restore disk about 2 minutes ago (I have had this thing for almost a week and have asked several times for any disks that came with it) so I am going with that method instead. But it is a very weird thing anyway. I wonder though if it had anything to do with it being a corporate version of Symantec instead of a home version? Maybe there was a registry key buried somewhere that kept looking for a file or a value or whatever. Symantec sucks.

Heh heh...but like you say it's going to be a registry key that refuses to move unless you order it to.

May be worth 'recommending' other Anti Virus applications to you customer.

Did you get this fixed yet? I had to same issue. So I used Hijackthis, CCleaner, deleted as many entries in the registry as possible using SAV and Symantec, stopped Symantec services in services.msc.

First I unistalled SAV
Then stopped the services
rebooted
Deleted as many files in the C:\Program File\Symantec as I could and rebooted several times to deactivate the .dll. Also needed to end a few running process to delete the .exe.
Used Hijackthis delete on reboot feature to delete stubbon .dll /.exe files which worked.
Then wen to C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared and deleted as much as I could there.
Then hit the registry for 15 minutes
Then ran CCleaners Registry cleaner, rebooted, issue was no more.

The restore disk wiped the drive completely so this is no longer an issue. Of course Symantec was bundled in with all the crap, but I didn't install it. Promptly removed it and installed AVG. Symantec sucks.
