Default Popups after fresh install of XP

Help!

Fresh install of XP...and getting popups so bad it immobilizes the computer. Prior to install, I had deleted partitions, recreated, formatted, etc...

Any help identifying where this stuff is hiding and how to get it out appreciated!

Hi Jeff.

What program have you installed since the reformat?
What do the popups say?

Please download HijackThis 1.99.1(http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3155.html) and extract to a perminant folder such as C:/HijackThis.

Run and do a system scan and save a log file.

Paste the contents in this topic.

Welcome back Jeff!

Well looking through your log I have noticed you have the 'W32.Xabot.Worm' which is a worm that attempts to spread itself through the IRC and file-sharing networks. It also has backdoor Trojan Horse capabilities, which allows a hacker to gain control of a compromised computer.

Sometime with these kinds of infections, your computer is compromised so much it can never be trusted again.

I suggest since that you recently reformatted and it doesnt look like you have many programs installed that you reformat again.

Also if you do online banking I suggest you change your password from another PC.

I also notice that you have :

No firewall
No anti virus
No sp2 + possibly other critical windows updates.

If you do reformat again make sure you have a firewall, anti virus and all windows updates.

Thanks for the tremendous feedback...

i was right in the midst of the reinstall so it was running as bare as could be. i had a terrible time getting into msconfig but once i did and started in diagnostic mode, i was able to run highjackthis. i will take your advice.

Also, i feel vulnerable (bashful) showing you this file...but i had another pc on this network...do you think it could have been compromised?? I will attach the log but it's a little hefty...
