I have a desktop PC that was recently infected with a real bad rootkit. The rootkit disabled all of my antivirus programs, prevented me from booting into safe mode, and caused several other "inconveniences". It even spread itself to my flash drive and transferred itself to other PCs that way.
The virus has been removed however many of the broken pieces of Windows still need to be repaired. One big problem is that my network connection has been disabled and I can't seem to be able to re-enable it.
I had a similar problem a few years back and I remember going into the registry to make a change. It was a real simple fix, as the virus had only changed one setting in the registry but that's all that it took. It was a simple matter of changing the value from a number 4 to a number 1 (or something like that). The problem is that I printed out the solution back then but have misplaced it. I have done Google searches but can't seem re-locate that solution. Does anyone out there know where, in the registry, that setting is, or how I can get my network to work again?
Thanks,
CC
