Default Need New AV Software

Well I've been using McAfee which I know is crap. I am wondering whether to buy something like NOD32 or would AVG be fine? I don't go on too many sketchy sites, and rarely download anything unless I know it's safe. Also I need a new free firewall and a new free spyware program. If you could recommend some software i'td be helpful .

both of your av selections are excellent. I would go with avg at the moment. I am testing M$ new security essentials and like it a lot. Prior to that I used AVG. It should be available to the public relatively soon as well.

As for firewalls I use the hardware one in my router with windows firewall. I have used Zone Alarm and Online amour and they are ok a bit overbearing but good products. Comodo is also a viable choice as well.

For spyware programs take a look at some of the offerings in Osiris guide.

Thanks for the recommended software, I dled AVG and Comodo Free Firewall. Gonna see how those work.

Edit: Also, how often should I set AVG to scan?

I had it set to auto protect. I manually scanned about once a week or if I went to a dodgy site and felt the need.

I left everything set to the default, and set it to scan once a week. Also left all Comodo settings to default.

Edit: I also installed CCleaner and MalwareBytes from the Osiris spyware guide. Thanks guys, I feel much better about my my computer's protections now.
